Check if GPS is on (SportyPal won't necessarily turn it on if it's off). Try restarting your device several times.

"Try restarting your device several times"??? With all due respect, that is not an acceptable solution. Each boot sequence on an Android device is about 2 minutes. Google's MyTracks takes only a few seconds to lock on to satellites. May I suggest you do some debugging to see what's wrong with your app?

i am having the same problem on my droid with the latest version of Sporty Pal. It was working great. Did the latest update add more bugs?

I'm using a Motorola Droid (Android 2.0.1) and I've noticed that it stays in the "Initializing GPS" thing for a long time. It does eventually get through it but it is kind of annoying that it takes so long (several minutes most of the time). I've checked the GPS with GPS Status and Google Maps before starting SportyPal and it's always working fine but SportyPal still takes several minutes to initialize GPS. I have no idea why.

This bug occurred to me today. I'm using a Nexus One. Without realizing it, I started sporty pal with GPS disabled and then sporty pal said "Initializing GPS" I enabled GPS and then went back to the program and it was still trying to initialize GPS. I restarted the device and then it worked fine. I think I may have gotten the same result if I used a task killer to kill sporty pal and then restarted it. This isn't exactly the same bug as OP but I hope it helps in debugging it.

I am having the same issue as all of you with my Droid running 2.0.1

I tried to just task kill Sportypal and restart it, but did not work. Had to reboot the whole phone, only thing I have found so far to work.

I'm not sure but I'm thinking it may be an issue with my Droid's GPS. I've tried starting GPS and just going to GPS Status and sometimes that's quick and other times it takes a while.

I was having the problem badly on Monday. I stopped SportyPal and brought up GPS Status, and it couldn't get a signal either. I was in an open area that should have been able to see lots of satellites. I finally power cycled my Droid, and that fixed it.

Hi,

Since my last Sportypal update, I'm facing the following problems:

- Too much time on creating a new workout (due to the same message this post presents);
- But, even when starts, some minutes after, SportyPal stops! (like loosing GPS signal)

The last version seems to have problems, since I cannot finish a single workout :(

Regards.

I'm having the same issue. My other apps have no problems initializing the GPS. I'm running Android on Droid 2.0.1.

I restart with no improvement... usually takes 10 minutes or so... currently sitting here at work with my cycling gear on ready for a ride, hoping that the GPS will initialize soon.

Please help!

Did you try getting out of SportyPal and checking it with the GPS Status app?

Are you in a clear outdoor area where you should be able to have a straight line of sight to several satellites?

I had to power cycle my Droid because of this again on Friday. It always comes up immediately after I power cycle.

I've had this happen several times, including today, and I don't have a droid. Obviously this is an app problem and not a droid problem.

It could be an Android problem.

As I pointed out, I got out of SportyPal and brought up the GPS Status app and had the same problem. The fact that power cycling the Droid fixes it sometimes, suggests a larger issue.

It feels like something is getting the GPS in some sort of weird state where it can't lock onto satellite signals. It could be anything. It's possible that the app initiates the problem, but when the next app takes over the GPS, it should start to work. It doesn't. I would guess that there's probably an issue in the device drivers.

And I have the same problem on my Samsung Galaxy i7500. It takes several minutes before it is initialized and I can start my workout.

And my GPS is enabled before starting a workout!

By the way - It would be nice with calories on cross country skiing:)

I'm running 1.7.5 and initializing seems to be taking longer and longer. Today I got tired of waiting and used Cardio Trainer and it fired right up, no issue at all. I prefer Sportypal, but something needs to change or I'm switching apps.

Thought I'd give an update.

I downloaded 1.7.6. Verified it by starting it up and saw the message that GPS wasn't initialized. I clicked no, don't initialize.

Time for my ride. First I turn on GPS via that widget (I forget the name, it includes Bluetooth, wi-fi screen brightness, GPS and sync).

I don't get the question about starting GPS.

I watch the box, Initializing GPS......wait......wait...., go back and fire up Cardio Trainer, then go back to Sportypal and try again and viola, GPS initialized.

Maybe tomorrow I'll let it turn on GPS, maybe that will be better.
